Playing with time
Tepe Nautilus, Istanbul
To coincide with the 2012 opening of Istanbul’s new Bosphorus rail tunnel and station, located directly next door, Tepe Nautilus embarked on a major mall makeover. We were invited to review, propose and design fundamental changes for the 8-year-old shopping complex.
Inspired by recent discoveries of the ancient city port under the tunnel site, the interior concept plays with the spirit, stories and objects of the ancient harbour, bringing a new materiality and symbolic character to the mall. Ceilings became ship forms, corridors became decks and kiosks became shells, all set within aquatic textures and illuminations. The intensive construction work was executed at night over 18 months, minimising interruptions to mall operation.
