CONCEPT I DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS 2024

We are in the midst of a digital design revolution where the constraints of the past are giving way to the infinite possibilities of the future.

Concept i  Design Fundamentals for 2024, generated through our globe-trotting experience on a wide range of project types, contexts, and cultures. When talking about architecture, interiors, landscape and more, we look holistically across geographies, communities, cultures and oceans to see what’s trending. Here’s our take on the newest design moves that shape the way we live and experience our physical world.

1. Biophilic Design

Biophilic design will continue to prioritize people’s wellbeing, embracing health & wellness, using natural strategies, elements, materials, tones and textures to optimize the human living environment. Perhaps that’s why Pantone has introduced it’s PANTONE Peach Fuzz 13-1023. 2024 as color of the Year – A natural, velvety, gentle peach whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and heart.

2. Inclusivity

Digital connectivity is accelerating the integration of global communities. Inclusive design methodologies will continue to be harnessed, to understand and enable people of all backgrounds and abilities; address accessibility, age, culture, economic status, education, gender, geographic location, language, and race.

3. Phygital

Brands recognize the need for interactive moments within the physical shopping environment, to drive footfall. The design transformation in bricks-and-mortar stores will continue, with an emphasis on using augmented reality, (AR) and virtual reality (VR) = mixed reality technology to enhance real life experiences.

4. Experiential

As companies collect more data on their users, more personalized user experiences will become the norm. With the advancement of technology, design will be more efficient, intuitive, and user-friendly than ever before. As a result, user experiences will be more personalized and engaging.

5. Sustainability
Architects will adapt stronger net-zero energy design strategies, where the total amount of energy used yearly by a building is equal to or less than the amount of energy created onsite. Net-zero energy buildings are made possible through the use of innovative technologies and renewable power generation.

6. Artificial Intelligence
Generative AI and its machine learning algorithms will quickly revolutionize the design process in multiple ways:
Sifting through vast amounts of user data significantly decreasing the time it takes to identify, gather and process valuable insights.
Detailed, well crafted prompts will save hours of time in exploring design approach strategies and directions.
Visualization will be accelerated and enhanced revolutionizing the way clients and designers interrogate design possibilities.

7. Adaptability
Designers will create more adaptable buildings and spaces that can morph and change to new uses throughout an extended lifespan. Rather than designing carbon intensive, single use buildings, clients will increasingly demand adaptability that is resilient to change and provides an increased long-term value.

8. Memorable Place Making
Designers are taking a bolder visual design approach to differentiate and provide more unique experiences. While white space and minimalism have been popular for years, more expressive and stylized design solutions are being used to fascinate, inspire and engage audiences.

9. Food Savvy Mixes
Socially connected, food-savvy consumers are driving changes in the f&b offer in shopping centers. Designers are now curating more responsive and creative mixes of culinary experiences, tailored by time-of-day demand, including street food, super-casualized food halls and specialist concepts, fast-food, refuel and relax, fast-casual, grab n’ go, food kiosks, bars, and full-service restaurants.

10. Mixed Reality
Mixed reality platforms, combining AR, VR and real world platforms will continue to permeate our everyday lives, allowing users to immerse themselves in, and interact with incredible sensory experiences.
